Trial Run

My hair will look better for parties tomorrow night, but today was just sort of seeing if I could pull it off. It worked!...Except the guy who thought I was entered into a beauty pageant. I guess he's not really that into Audrey Hepburn.

3 miles is possible!

|
Here's my time, for the record, in case I forget it.

My goal is to be able to run the Frosty 5k on New Year's Day, which might be sort of difficult considering I probably will not have slept very much, and I need 7 hours to function. But after running tonight, I know that a 5k is within reach! And how cool would that be to add one of those running number signs to my bulletin board?

I listened to podcasts of Ecclesiastes, which was actually sort of refreshing from the norm of listening to music, and interesting to hear so many pieces of wisdom that were written so long ago, yet apply to us so well today.

Here's my path. I think the only reason that I made it an actual 3 miles (3.04 to be exact!) is that I mapped it out beforehand and knew how far I had to go. I told myself that I could only quit when I felt like I was going to die. (I took my ID just in case I really did pass out.) As I rounded the corner to 13th street, I got this extra energy and a smile because I knew that I was almost there, and there was no way that I was going to quit when I only had 8 blocks until the end. Is that what adrenaline feels like?

The Daily DeMo: There's a shortage of pumpkin!

The Daily DeMo : Edition 24

DD184 :: Saturday - I finally had a longer conversation with the lady that lives next door to me. She takes care of her disabled grandson on Saturday afternoons. I already knew this part, but what I didn't know is that she likes to crochet, knit, make collages, quilt, used to do a lot of artwork, and used to work for Rainbows United until a few years ago when she got to be too weak to lift her grandson. So now instead of a caregiver, she's more of a tutor to him. Have you talked to your neighbor today?

DD185 :: Sunday - Tonight in Pathways the El Salvador mission team shared about their experience from the trip. A few of them had a very close call in the ocean on the last day of the trip and thankfully they all made it out of the water safely, and thankfully there were many people (both in the States and on the team) praying for their safety, though not all of them knew specifics until after the trip. I heard Jenn's perspective on what happened and while I was thankful that they all made it back safely, I don't think it was until tonight that it finally hit me that I could have lost four friends. Life would never be the same, and it will still not be the same for those people who were involved. Jennifer said it so well when she repeated a quote from Pastor Doug: "I'm not finished with you yet, and God is not finished with you yet." Their time here is not over because God still has big plans for them here. It was an emotional night and makes me want to hold tighter to my friends.

DD186 :: Monday - Have you ever wanted to learn how to speak Lao? Suzy gives a mini-lesson on the language. She is a college friend who is in Vietnam right now. My fave is what Suzy says: "The word for keys is luuk ka jee (luuk = children) and the word for lock is me ka jee (me = mother). Isn't that great?! So the lock is the mother of her children, the keys. LOVE it."

DD187 :: Tuesday - If you're behind on your credit cards and your mortgage, you should get current on your mortgage. Even though the credit collectors are punks who try to intimidate you into paying, the mortgage collectors will foreclose. They are not to be messed with.

DD188 :: Wednesday - Today I learned how column inches work. I'm kind of surprised that I didn't know all of this before now. I've been working on getting newspaper ads for Judgement House, and wanted to figure out the best size deal for my money. This is a very straightforward post about column inches.

DD189 :: Thursday - Ahhh Taking Chance. Have you seen that movie? It's on my list, and I'm just waiting for Heather & Rob to buy it and then invite me over to watch it. ;) I get teary just watching the trailer, so I'm pretty sure that I'll be bawling at the end of the movie. Anyway, I was watching the interviews & behind the scenes footage, and learned that it's very uncommon for a Lieutenant Colonel to escort a Private First Class. So I looked it up to see the difference in ranking. There's a huge difference. Like 13 levels of difference according to this chart.

DD190 :: Friday - There's a shortage of pumpkin this season! Fortunately I have one big and two small pie pumpkins on my steps right now, just sitting there all cute and ready to be made into pie. Along with learning about the pumpkin shortage, I also learned that if the label on the pumpkin says "pie pumpkin" that it's appropriate to make into pie. I guess it make sense, but I thought the pie part mean that they're just cute pumpkins, and not necessarily that it meant the pumpkins are grown for pie. Seriously! And... the little old man working at Home Depot told me that he met a customer who told him that you can take off the top of a little pumpkin (the itty bitty centerpiece size), scrape out the seeds and fill it with brown sugar and honey, put it in the microwave, and then eat it! I never would have thought to do that. Sounds like a very sweet treat that I will let you try first! :)

I haven't asked lately, what did you learn this week?

Plugging for free stuff

If you haven't heard of Alice.com you should go check it out. My sister has used it and loves it. Alice.com provides household items to you, free of shipping, and for prices that are competitive with local stores. It's helpful if you live far from a Wal-Mart, or if you just don't like shopping. You can create your own shelf and tell it when you think you might need your next order of bandaids. You can tell it to send it to you automatically 3 months from now, or you can go on and order manually. Pretty cool!

They're starting something new with giving away goodie bags in select orders. So you're not losing anything by ordering, you're maybe getting more than you ordered!

Alice.com is really easy to use, and for this girl who appreciates a fun and well-made website, I don't mind spending some time here. :)

Aren't those duckies the cutest things ever?
