Daily DeMo : chutney, a TAF, and olives

|
Daily DeMo :: Edition 40
January 16 - 22, 2010

DD295 :: Saturday - Some chairty organization presidents get $300K. You can see how your favorite charity distributes money by going to charitynavigator.org.

DD296 :: Sunday - I learned how chutney is made. I'd never had it before, and I had no idea what it was. Jenn and Heather did a great job hosting friends for lunch!

DD297 :: Monday - I learned how to read the weather forecast in airplane language. (Technically, it's called a TAF.) For instance,

FM182200 09005KT 5SM BR SCT015 means that the best the weather will get on this day, the 18th day of the month {18}, is at 2200 zulu (4 PM) {2200}, Wind at 90 degrees at 5 knots {09005KT}, 5 miles visibility {5SM} and scattered clouds at 1500 feet with a "baby rain" (mist) {BR} If you want to figure all that out on your own, you can go here.

Who thinks of this stuff???

DD297.1 - The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is one of the best books that I've read in a really long time.

DD298 :: Tuesday - It's way more fun to slap on some stamps and snail mail a book to a friend than it is to personally deliver it.

DD299 :: Wednesday - Spain produces 36% of the world's olives. Why do I know that? Because I was looking for an environmental brochure and found an online magazine about olives. Oh the places you'll go thanks to Google.

DD300 :: Thursday - Human bed warmers! I'm not so sure that this will take off in the U.S. Most of the opinions that I've heard are that electric blankets will do the job, and having someone else in the bed first is kind of gross.

DD301 :: Friday - Andi explains how France only has major sales twice a year because they are regulated by the government. As a result, they shop more for quality over quantity.

DD301.1 - G.I. Jesus? What do you think about this?

DD297 - It always amazes me when we fly and Doug looks up the weather and just looks at it and knows without thinking about what all that means. I just nod my head.

DD297.1 - Marcia recommended this book to me a couple weeks ago. I'm gonna have to check it out!

DD301.1 - The link doesn't work. Sad.

re: DD301.1 I fixed it. It's about the gun sights that the military uses having verses on them. Apparently now the company is voluntarily removing the verses.

I'm seriously impressed with your airplane weather language...now will you use your powers for GOOD or EVIL? ;-)

Nice to blog meet you, haha! I have been reading Lincee forever, since she came in email form. Totally one of my guilty pleasures. I didn't really do to much "research" per se on the middle class stuff but it really freaked me out (mainly because I live in the city and it's way too expensive to raise kids on 85K a year!!!). Perhaps this should be my wake up call to actually record the State of the Union and pay attention to things.

I feel compelled to add to your excellent TAF translation that the "FM" in the beginning means those conditions are expected *from* 22:00 GMT on the 18th (until the next TAF, which probably starts something like "FM190400").

Also: human bed warmers = creepy.
